Kathryn Thompson broke down in the prisoner’s box, crying and covering her face while the crown recapped the details of her crimes at her sentencing hearing.
Thompson was charged and convicted along with Shayne Lund and Avery Taylor. Both Lund and Taylor are still before the court.
In January 2015, Thompson pleaded guilty to 11 charges, she had been facing 26.
A number of the crimes she pleaded guilty to involve child pornography – including making and possessing it.
The charges also include:
- Bestiality
- Conspiring to administer a noxious substance
- Conspiring to commit sexual assault
The crown is calling for a sentence of four to six years, with credit for time Thompson has already spent in custody. The crown also wants Thompson to be deemed a long-term offender.
“(Thompson) made carefully thought out decisions and they had an impact on vulnerable people,” Crown Attorney Indy Kandola told the court Thursday.
The crown argued Thompson had no explanation for her behaviour, but to satisfy her vulnerability.
“(Thompson) put herself ahead of vulnerable victims, not caring about what happens to others,” the crown suggested.
The defence is asking for two years less a day in jail, with credit for time already spent in custody and three years’ probation. That means Thompson would not spend any more time behind bars.
Once the crown and defence finish their sentencing submissions Thompson will be given an opportunity to address the court.
Lawyers are expected to finish their sentencing submissions Friday, but it could be several weeks before the judge hands down an appropriate sentence.
