Officials in a rural community near Bancroft are trying to assure residents that a wave of resignations from the fire department won't reduce the level of service.

Fire Chief Rick Middleton, his deputy chief and four other firefighters stepped down at the Wollaston Township Council meeting this week.

A statement from the municipality says that while the change is unfortunate, the fire service is still active and will be able to respond as needed in an emergency situation.

Middleton was disappointed after council voted against his request to pay the lost wages of two volunteer firefighters who took time away from their jobs to attend fire training centres in Trenton and Gravenhurst.
