Ontario's governing Liberals are firing back at a Conservative MP who suggested the province's updated sex-education curriculum puts children at risk.

Ottawa-area Conservative Cheryl Gallant urged Parliament to pass legislation with tougher penalties for child predators last week, saying the need was  demonstrated by Ontario's "sweeping changes" to its sex-ed curriculum.

Gallant said if withdrawing the revised curriculum can prevent one child "from being groomed for exploitation," then it must be scrapped.

Education Minister Liz Sandals told the legislature Gallant's comments were "false, misleading and should be condemned.

Sandals urged Ontario's Progressive Conservatives to distance themselves from Gallant's remarks in the House of Commons.

All three PC leadership candidates have complained the Liberal government did not consult nearly enough parents before releasing the curriculum and announcing it would be implemented this fall without any more changes.

Gallant said federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau should use his influence to get Premier Kathleen Wynne to withdraw Ontario's sex-ed curriculum.

"On behalf of all the parents, grandparents and the vulnerable children of Ontario, we demand that the federal party leader order this outrageous policy to be withdrawn now," she said in the Commons.
