A Western Region OPP officer has been airlifted to a Toronto hospital in serious condition after a crash near Angus today.

Staff Sgt. Brian Humber tells CTV News he was on duty at the time.

The crash happened just before 10 a.m. on a curve along County Road 10 near the 4th Line of Essa when his unmarked cruiser went off the road. Police say it rolled off the road, through a ditch, and hit trees before coming to a stop. The officer had to be pulled from the vehicle by emergency crews.

Ornge airlifted the officer to St. Michael’s hospital in Toronto with serious injuries to the head and chest. Police say his injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening.

The officer's name isn't being released until all his family members have been notified. The OPP's west region stretches from Sarnia to Tobermory.

It's unclear why he was in the area at the time, or whether he was responding to a call.

County Road 10 is now open after being closed for the crash.
