Police had to rescue a boater after his boat capsized on Lake Simcoe Thursday afternoon.

When police arrived the man was holding onto his capsized boat approximately 60 meters from shore near Victoria Crescent in Orillia.

Officers borrowed a canoe from a nearby cottage to rescue the man, who was not wearing a life jacket.

Police say the incident could have turned out to be deadly had the man not been rescued as quickly as he was.

The OPP want to remind the public to always wear a life vest when on the water.
