A Toronto-based company has been awarded the contract to construct a new multi-million dollar recreation facility in Orillia.

City council approved a plan on Wednesday night to award a $48-million bid to Atlas Corporation to build the centre on West Street.

Mayor Steve Clarke is happy the project is finally coming to fruition, but would have liked to have seen the bid a little lower.

“We were disappointed it didn’t come in more competitive than it did,” he says.

The project is $3 million more than the original cost. However, Clarke says there won’t be any further direct impact on Orillia tax rates.

Clarke attributes the increased cost to soil issues at the site, and a high American dollar.

The city hopes the centre will be open in 2018.
