A local Lions club in Muskoka is being forced to replace a number of Canadian flags and poles in the town after they were stolen.

More than 100 Canadian flags line the streets of downtown Gravenhurst as part of a fundraiser by the Lions Club.

“I think it’s a wonderful symbol of Canada to be a proud Canadian, I even have two of these flags hanging in my window,” says Sharon Morton with the Lions Club.

Many Gravenhurst residents say they are disgusted that someone is stealing the flags and poles right off the street.

“I think it’s just sad and it goes to show how they really don’t take it seriously,” says Rachel Gropper.

The flags cost about $12 each, the poles $15. The club puts out the flags in front of businesses and homes for a $50 donation, normally raising $4,500 for community projects. But replacing the stolen flags is eating up a lot of the money.

In 2014, 120 Canadian flags were stolen from the Gravenhurst downtown core and because they spent so much money replacing flags they were forced to change suppliers and buy a less expensive flag.

Police are aware of the thefts and the Lions club say they’ll keep replacing the flags because Canadians never give up.
