With only weeks until Christmas, couriers are hard at work delivering tens of thousands of packages to people all across the region.

From big parcels to little envelopes this is the busiest day of the year for FedEx. Employees in Barrie know they'll see double the average volume over the next couple of weeks.

“There's four Mondays in December that really show the busiest volume we've ever seen,” says Kevin Ackroyd. “Containers have come off airplanes from Memphis, Tenn., Indianapolis and from Toronto coast-to-coast.”

It’s not that December hasn't always been a busy month, but this year is busier than ever because more people are shopping online.

According to Ackroyd, only 41 per cent of Canadians were using online shopping a couple of years ago. Now it’s closer to 61 per cent.

“It's a good tired. We kind of work our way up to it because we know what's coming so we prepare ourselves. Of course the overtime is nice too,” says Mike Quin, a 33 year veteran courier.

There are some dates to keep in mind if you plan on sending a package. The last day for overnight North American shipping is Dec. 22 with FedEx and Dec. 12 for regular mail through Canada Post.
