Environment Canada is investigating whether a landspout tornado touched down in Bracebridge on Tuesday.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says video they have received suggests it’s possible that a landspout travelled through the Muskoka municipality during a storm system in the afternoon.

Investigators are now in the process of getting in touch with local authorities to see if there was any damage in the town.

“They are not associated with strong supercell thunderstorms, but rather form when winds converge at the surface to start a circulation and that circulation goes up to the base of the cloud,” Coulson said while describing a landspout.

According to meteorologists, these types of tornadoes don’t typically cause significant damage, but can be strong enough to down trees and damage roofs.

No watches or warnings were in place when the reported landspout was spotted. A funnel cloud advisory was later released for parts of Simcoe County and York Region, but never for the Muskoka area.

Environment Canada is asking anyone who has photos or video of the reported landspout to send them to storm.ontario@ec.gc.ca.
