Trustees from the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) are expected to hear a plea on Wednesday night to keep Barrie Central open for longer than expected.
Some parents and students say if Barrie Central closes in June of 2016 as planned, there simply won’t be enough room for all of its students in other Barrie high schools.
The closure of Central has been hotly debated for some time but parent say one their biggest worries is that construction of a new high school for south Barrie hasn’t even begun yet. They say that will leave the city’s remaining high schools too crowded if Central closes as planned so on Wednesday night they hoped to buy more time.
“We want to keep it open forever to be honest with you but step one is to keep it open at least until the new school is open,” says Amy Austin with Save Barrie Central. “Step two is to keep it open permanently.”
On Wednesday, a committee of trustees is expected to vote on the extension but it’s not clear if they’ll reconsider the closure altogether.
Katherine Ward will have more tonight on CTV News at 11.
