People describe it as high-energy with a few punches thrown in.

“Piloxing is Pilates done vertically standing up, with the infusion of boxing into it, so taking all of the boxing aspects and making it safer using a Pilates background,” says Heather Denstedt, owner of Pilatez.ca Studio.

Pilates is all about core strengthening. Boxing adds speed and movement. The combination of the two is piloxing, and this Hollywood fitness craze has just come to our region.

“Men are taking it, women are taking it, mothers are bringing their daughters, we've just got such a great response from it, we're loving it,” says Denstedt.

The class has three parts that marry Pilates, boxing, and a little free-style dance.

“We tend to focus on lengthening and strengthening the muscles so we are constantly cueing being strong and long and lean in your muscles groups so you are really burning a good energy with those muscles,” says Kelly Patterson McGrath, piloxing instructor.

You don't need a lot of special equipment, except these weighted gloves that can be worn for added resistance. From the time the music plays, you are always on the move.

“It's a really good aerobic from the minute you start even when you are doing the warm up you're moving,” says Lyn Monovan. “It's the best, it's good, it keeps you going.”

People here like the class for lots of reasons.

“I've had issues in the past with my shoulder, it's built up my muscle,” says Renee Duggan. “I just feel wonderful at the end of it.”

No matter what the reason, for these piloxing pros the workout works.

“It's a wonderful, beautiful combination,” Patterson McGrath says. “You feel so strong and you are still working that core maintaining all of those beautiful alignment muscles and having a lot of fun.”

Instructors say people of any age can do piloxing and the class can be tailored to your skill level. And people say it's a workout that you feel the next day.

They say there's a fitness program to fit every person, and there are certainly a lot of new and perhaps unusual ways to work out. All this week we're going to show you some of the newest fitness programs aimed at getting you in shape and keeping your interest as you work out.
