A sentencing hearing is underway for the teenage-boy who caused a collision in Caledon last summer that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl.
The 14-year-old, whose identity is protected under the Youth Justice Act, pleaded guilty to criminal negligence causing death, possession of stolen property and failing to comply with an undertaking in February.
The OPP say the youth was driving a stolen minivan on July 26, 2016 on Highway 10. The teen lost control, clipped a hydro pole and rolled onto a brick gate.
The girl was a passenger in the van. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The parents of the 12-year-old girl killed in the crash confirmed her identity to CTV News on Monday as Adrianna Brzakovski. They shared photos of her and gave CTV News Barrie permission to release her name.
The court heard victim impact statements from the young girl's parents Monday morning.
"I will never be the same without her - I miss her so much," said the girls mother in a victim impact statement read by the crown in court Tuesday.
"She was not only my daughter, but my best friend, " said father as he read his impact statement before the court. "Why was something so preventable allowed to happen?" he said.
The crown is seeking a jail sentence of 18 months plus probation.
"This is a tragic case," said crown attorney Liana Marcon. "There is no sentence that can bring (her) back."
The defence is asking for 12 months probation and 175 hours of community service. The teen's lawyer argued her client has turned his life around since the crash.
"No matter what happens moving forward my client will be impacted," said defence lawyer Shauna Pemberton. "This is a young man who has the potential to do well."
The judge will sentence the teen in May.
