A teenager charged in connection to a crash that claimed the life of a 12-year-old girl made his first court appearance on Friday.

The accused, who is under the age of 16, was in an Orangeville court this morning. He was clean shaven and didn’t appear to have any visible injuries.

The boy’s identity is protected under the Youth Justice Act. The same goes for the victim. However, court documents have revealed the accused is 14-years-old.

The accused faces a number of charges, including criminal negligence causing death, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

Police say the youth was driving a stolen Toyota Sienna minivan along Highway 10 in Caledon, when he lost control, clipped a hydro pole and rolled onto a brick gatepost. The girl was a passenger in the van and was pronounced dead at the scene.

He will appear back in an Orangeville court on Aug. 3 to set a bail hearing.
