Thousands of people are expected to flock to Alliston for the 40th annual potato festival this weekend.

Vendors showed up early on Friday to set-up for the festival and for good reason says festival organizer Eva Martin.

“This is the time when people come home to meet old friends, old neighbours, and get to see some of the events,” says Martin.

In 2012, potato sales raised more than $5,000 for local charities.

Ray Cole never misses the festival, he’s been a potato farmer for more than 50 years and says when you’re talking growing a good potato, you better be patient.

“Probably 90 to 120 days depending in the variety. Some varieties are early but storage potatoes take longer,” says Cole.

The festival runs all weekend on Victoria St. in Alliston.
