Police have identified the two people killed last week in a horrific five-vehicle crash on Highway 48 near Sutton.

Three gravel haulers, a commercial cube van and a SUV collided in a chain-reaction crash on Thursday. Steve Peticca, 44, of Vaughan, and 34-year-old Oleksander Shutov, of North York were pronounced dead at the scene.

Peticca was the driver of the SUV, while Shutov was a passenger in the cube van. Three other people were taken to hospital, including a child. On Friday, police listed them as being in stable condition.

Investigators are still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash. The OPP previously stated that several of the vehicles had stopped on the highway before a construction zone.

Police also said last week it was likely that one of the vehicles approached at a high speed and didn’t stop. Investigators noted that there is a crest in the road.

It’s still unclear whether charges are going to be laid.

The highway was closed for over 12 hours.
