Runners hit the pavement on Sunday morning to conquer a half marathon for a good cause in Barrie.

More than 800 runners participated in the 5th annual Barrie Waterfront Half Marathon, which offers a 21 km, a 10 km and a 5 km course.

Organizers are hoping to raise more than $50,000 for nine charities, which include the Alzheimer Society Simcoe County, Gilda’s Club and David Busby Street Centre.

"The charities are the backbone of the event. They help manage the water stations, cheering stations, they are out on the course,” says race director Jeff Moyle. “So it’s a good way to engage with your local charities. It’s a good way to raise some good money and have a good time running on our course."

CTV Barrie’s Tony Grace was the master of ceremonies and joined runners in the half marathon.

It’s not yet known how much money was raised.
