Business owners in downtown Penetanguishene are expressing concerns over a major construction project that could begin this spring.

“We need more information on when things are going to start and when they are going to come to an end,” said Glen Bryant of Bryant’s Jewllers.

The town is planning to replace much of the underground infrastructure including water and sewer pipes.

Many business operators say the work is long overdue, but there are concerns.

“The biggest thing for everybody will be the lack of traffic and it’s going to affect businesses,” said Diane Bald at Arborist Flower Shop.

The project is estimated to cost $7.2 million with the provincial and federal governments paying for almost half.

The town still hasn’t decide whether to go ahead with the construction this spring. Either way, business owners say they will have to work together to keep customers coming to the downtown.

“We have to let them know we will be open as usual and we have access to all of our Main Street businesses,” said Jo Ann Minard at OMG Furniture and Fashions.

Council will review its options for the construction at its meeting Wednesday night. A decision on how to proceed is expected in the coming months.
