Barrie police are once again asking the public to not leave their pets in hot vehicles after responding eight separate incidents in the last 24 hours.

On Monday, officers were called to a south end store after a cat was seen inside a car with only one of the windows lowered about an inch. The owner was located and was cautioned about causing harm to her pet.

In addition to this call, Barrie police say they’ve responded to seven incidents in the last day where dogs were left in hot cars. Investigators say the owner’s excuses ranged from buying fast food to purchasing a gym membership.

A pet owner can be charged under the Criminal Code of Canada for causing pain and suffering to an animal. Barrie police recommend residents leave their pets at home.
