A woman has died and four others have been injured after the pickup truck they were in flipped over on the frozen surface of Lake Simcoe.
The crash happened late Sunday afternoon on the east side of the lake near Thorah Island, about three kilometers west of the main shoreline at Beaverton.
Durham Regional Police say the truck was travelling on the ice when it hit a break in the ice and flipped over.
Police say several people were thrown from the vehicle.
A 32-year-old woman from Ukraine was found at the scene with no vital signs, and later pronounced dead.
Two men - a 51-year-old Richmond Hill man and a 41-year-old Toronto man - have injuries described as serious. One of them was airlifted to Sunnybrook in Toronto, while the other was rushed to hospital in Orillia and then airlifted to Sunnybrook. They are expected to recover.
Two others were also injured: a man who was taken to hospital in Uxbridge with non-life threatening injuries, and a man who was taken to hospital in Orillia with what are described as minor injuries.
Police say they believe the occupants weren't wearing seatbelts.
Because of the location of the rollover, fire crews from departments up and down the east side of Lake Simcoe were called in to help.
That included the Ramara Fire Department, which was one of the first emergency departments on the scene with an air boat.
Residents in the area tell CTV News that it hasn't been uncommon for vehicles to be traveling out to Thorah Island on the Lake Simcoe ice this winter.
Durham Regional Police are continuing their investigation.
