A low pressure system is making its way across Lake Huron on Christmas Eve and will bring strong wind gusts and possibly isolated thunderstorms.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for areas around the region:

  •       Barrie, Collingwood, Hillsdale
  •       Midland, Coldwater, Orr Lake
  •       Orillia, Lagoon City, Washago
  •       Haliburton
  •       Muskoka including Bracebridge, Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Port Carling, Port Severn
  •       Parry Sound, Rosseau, Killbear Park

The national weather agency says wind gusts up to 100 km/hour are expected and may cause tree damage and power outages.

Wind warnings are also in effect for parts of the region:

  •        Innisfil
  •        Dufferin County including Orangeville, Grand Valley, Mansfield, Shelburne
  •        York Region including Newmarket, Georgina, Vaughan, Richmondhill, Markham
  •        Durham Region including Beaverton, Uxbridge

“An isolated thunderstorm or two is not out the question,” Environment Canada said in a statement.

Environment Canada has also issued rainfall and wind warnings for Grey-Bruce.

The weather agency also warns the deepening low will blast a sharp cold front across the region later on tonight.  The rain, fog and isolated thunderstorms will come to an end just after the front moves through, but very strong and gusty winds will follow.

The strong winds will persist on Christmas Day, but are expected to end through the latter part of the day.
