A portion of one of Barrie’s busiest streets has reopened, but the repairs are not complete.

The City of Barrie had closed Mapleview Drive East between Huronia Road and Country Lane earlier this month so crews could finish work on a sanitary sewer and water main.

The city reopened that stretch of road Friday earlier than expected. The city said a portion of the deep sanitary sewer could not be installed due to the significant amount of groundwater, which impeded excavation.

“We had some difficulties with the soil conditions that occurred out there, so the contractor wasn't able to install quite as much as we had hoped,” said Stew Patterson with the City of Barrie.

Crews will continue with additional construction during the winter months, but the excavating will have to wait until spring 2017.
