An Orillia man who died after falling from a cliff is being remembered as someone who could brighten a room with his personality.
Tanner Jacobs was hiking with a friend through the Eugenia Falls Conservation Area in Grey County on Sunday. Police say the 19-year-old fell 40 feet down a ravine after losing his footing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends say Jacobs was known for his kindness and contagious smile. They also say he knew how to light up a room and was pure of heart.
Rock climbing guides say the numerous cliffs and crevices along the Niagara Escarpment have become more popular than ever and visitors don't always realize how dangerous these places can be.
“Limestone is brittle rock so it can break easily. It’s also unstable because there is a lot of soil in the rock, as well it can be very slippery when wet,” says Troy Millsap, of Free Spirit Tours.
The Grey Sauble Conservation Authority owns the property, but will not comment on what happened until they have had a chance to review the details of the police investigation.
This is the second fatality after a fall from an escarpment cliff this year.
In May, a 23-year-old woman died after falling at Rattle Snake Point in Milton.
