People across our region are mourning the death of those killed in Orlando.

As Pride Week celebrations get started in much of the region, a moment of silence was held on Monday in York Region and on Sunday night in Midland.

A crowd gathered in front of the Georgina Civic Centre for the annual Pride Flag raising on Monday afternoon. After it was raised, it moved back down to half-staff.

"I think whenever something horrific like that happens in the world, we want to do something, and this is something that we can show our respect," says Georgina Mayor Margaret Quirk.

The town is just one of many groups showing its respect for the LGBTQ community. The flag raising is just one of many Pride Week events in York Region that will now be altered because of the shootings.

"The Pride parade will have a whole part to the march after and before that will recognize those who have lost their lives in this incident in Orlando."

A gunman attacked a nightclub in Orlando in the early hours on Sunday killing 49 people.

Many say it's important for those in the LGBTQ community to come together.

"We need to send a message out to everyone who might be going through the pain of having lost somebody, that there is support, there is love coming your way," says Siva Gunaratnam.

Municipalities across the region are doing different things to honour the Orlando victims.

A vigil will be held at city hall in Barrie on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
