It’s going to get worse before it gets way better.

During its reconstruction of Essa Road and the expansion of Highway 400 above, the west-end Barrie daily commute’s aggravation is near its end.

The Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) construction of the a new interchanges at Essa Road and Highway 400, while also widening Essa Road to six lanes will hit a new milestone this week.

Significant roadwork on Highway 400, between Harvie Road and Tiffin Road, along with a widening of Essa Road between Fairview Road and Bryne Drives and Ardagh Drive has left many a commuter with a sense of despair during the last two years.

However, the end is nigh.

Bridge deck pouring was scheduled for last week, and the paving of Essa Road is green-lighted for this week.

Lane closures on Essa Road remain in effect with all lanes are expected to open in early November.

There will be a multi-use path on the north side of Essa Road from Bryne Drive to east of Fairview Road with a sidewalk on the south side.

The city says the ramp reopening is ahead of schedule. At least one lane in both directions will remain in place for the majority of the season, but full closures are required at times.

The MTO advises taking extra caution when driving through the construction zone.
