Security at Barrie's courthouse is getting back to normal after the Office of the Attorney General gave the OK to reduce security back to regular levels across the province.

It was increased Friday after a Peel Regional Police officer was shot at Brampton's courthouse.

Sgt. Rose Richter says local security measures were stepped up following Friday morning’s shooting that sent Peel Regional Police Const. Mike Klarenbeek to hospital.

Staff and lawyers who typically use a separate entrance had to use the courthouse’s main entrance and go through court security, which includes a metal detector and x-ray machine.

Klarenbeek is recovering in hospital from his injuries.

In a statement released by Peel police Saturday, Klarenbeek's wife said her husband wanted to thank a nurse who was at the courthouse on Friday morning.

“She was the first to tend to him, before the paramedics arrived. He says without her help, it may have had a different outcome,” Klarenbeek's wife, Lynn said. The statement adds that Klarenbeek's family is also thankful to everyone who has been offering support “through this difficult time.”

The suspect who shot Klarenbeek was killed in police gunfire Friday at the courthouse as they responded to the shooting.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is probing how police handled the shooting, and has assigned more than a dozen investigators to the case.

The SIU investigates all police actions involving death or serious injury.
