You’ll soon be able to take a weekend train to and from Toronto all year round.

In an announcement on Monday morning, the Ministry of Transportation and Metrolinx announced year-round weekend GO train service would be coming to the Barrie line.

“This is terrific news for the people of Barrie and throughout the region. Our community has asked for more GO Transit service and we are thrilled to provide more options to help people get where they need to go," says MPP Ann Hoggarth.

Starting Dec. 31, three trains will leave from Barrie’s Allandale GO Station. Trains will depart at 9:03 a.m., 9:47 a.m. and 11:02 a.m.

Three return trains from Toronto’s Union Station will leave at 4:28 p.m., 9:50 p.m., and 10:50 p.m.

“It gives people an option to get out of their cars. I mean that trip on the highway gets tougher every year,” says Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman. “Looking forward to trying to work on bringing people from Toronto up here for our many festivals and tourism opportunities.”

This is the first step in a bigger plan to eventually electrify the railroad and offer all-day service seven days a week.

Last summer 41,000 people used the weekend service.
