A provincial tribunal that is reviewing a controversial wind turbine project near Collingwood toured the site at the centre of the inquiry.

Some of the key players from the tribunal went for the own guided tour of the proposed site near the Collingwood Airport on Tuesday. The tour also included stops at local wet lands, streams and escarpment views.
“To see the topography, see the features included in the documents as well as see aircraft flying, from the two local aerodromes and see what this community and neighbourhood is all about,” says pilot Kevin Elwood.

The province has already approved the project, but it’s being appealed by many in the community, including the County of Simcoe, the Town of Collingwood and Clearview Township.

The $50 million project will see eight turbines built. The company behind the project, WPD, says the plan was reviewed by the province for three and a half years before it was approved.

WPD believes federal standards concerning airport safety have been met.

The environmental review tribunal will hear from 18 witnesses before the hearing wraps up at the end of next week.

The tribunal isn’t expected to make a decision until mid-August.
