A 44-year-old former emergency room doctor from Barrie’s RVH is facing criminal charges.

Dr. Darryl Gebien is facing 68 charges relating to forging prescriptions and trafficking of the prescription drug Fentanyl.

Gebien was originally arrested in November 2014 after a concerned pharmacist called police.

“It was brought to our attention by a local pharmacist who alerted us to a prescription he didn't feel was right,” said Barrie Police Const, Angela Butler.

Police have also arrested a 31-year-old Barrie woman and a 22-year-old Barrie man, who they allege were getting the prescriptions filled and bringing them back to the doctor.

“We do not believe these drugs were meant for the community,” said Butler. “We believe it was for personal use.”

As part of their investigation, police say more than 500 prescriptions for Fentanyl patches were fraudulently issued June and November of 2014.

Gebien is facing charges of making a forged document, using a forged document, trafficking a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a controlled substance.

RVH Chief of Staff Dr. Geoffrey Bond says they have “zero tolerance for any break of our Code of Conduct, or the standards set out by our professionals’ governing bodies.”

He also said Gebien hasn’t practiced at RVH since he was first arrested in November.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons said “a physician who is convicted of a criminal offence that is potentially relevant to his or her suitability to practise medicine is generally investigated” at which point they will answer to the College’s disciplinary committee.
