Officials say a sudden death at an apartment building in Barrie on Friday morning is linked to a carbon monoxide leak.

Police say they were called to the building on Eccles Street North and Park Street around 8:00 a.m. after a 76-year-old man was found without vital signs

The man was taken to RVH where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the man did not live at the apartment building but was doing maintenance on the interior.

A spokesperson from the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) tells CTV News the incident was carbon monoxide related. They say it appears a boiler vent failed inside the building which caused a carbon monoxide leak.

Barrie Fire Chief John Lynn tells CTV News that four firefighters were also transported to RVH for carbon monoxide inhalation. They were treated and released.

A City of Barrie bus was brought in to house tenants from the building while the building was ventilated.

The TSSA continues to investigate but have given the go ahead for repairs to be made and for the heat to be turned on inside the building.

An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death and the Coroner’s Office is assisting with the investigation
