There have been two arrests in a rash of rural break-ins that spanned the entire region and much of the province this summer.

The break-ins spanned from South Simcoe over to Collingwood, and as far east as Haliburton and all the way up to Timmins.

While different locations, the same things were being stolen: power tools, ATVs, and construction equipment. At one site alone in Bond Head, more than $120,000 worth of equipment was stolen. After a six-month investigation, police were able to charge two men: one from Orillia, the other from Innisfil.

There were a number of similarities. A lot of that equipment – about $350,000 – is unaccounted for. However, the investigation did lead to the arrest. The two men are before the court.

OPP Sgt. Peter Leon says because a lot of the equipment was being sold online, police are having a tough time tracking it all down.

If you buy something online from Kijiji or Craigslist that turns out to be stolen, police can seize that item from you and you won’t be reimbursed for the money you spent.
