Plans for new Alliston high school take significant step forward
Replacing a nearly 75-year-old Alliston high school has been a hot topic for years as the building ages and the town’s population increases, and now, plans to make that happen are taking a significant step forward.
Earlier this week, the Town of New Tecumseth approved the location for a new Banting Memorial High School on the south portion of the Banting Homestead known as Sir Frederick Banting Road.
The board said the new school is long overdue and will be a great way to honour Banting’s legacy.

Last year, the board wittled down its possible location list to two potential sites, including a lot on Victoria Street East, but noted it preferred the Sir Frederick Banting Homestead.
Initially, the town opted to keep the replacement school on the existing site, citing pre-existing infrastructure, but ultimately has aligned with the board’s preference for the location.
The board noted the property’s size, accessibility, and the logistics of construction as key factors.
“In addition, the unique program and facility opportunities available at this location align with the legacy of Sir Frederick Banting,” stated John Dance, Simcoe County public school board’s director of education.
“With this decision, we are now in a position to proceed with land negotiations and look forward to advancing this much needed project,” Dance added.
The town noted the project will mean upgrades in the area, including traffic signals, sidewalk improvements, and piped infrastructure upgrades along John W Taylor Road and Sir Frederick Banting Road.
In 2022, the Ontario government announced a $42.5 million investment for the public school board to build a replacement for the Alliston high school.
No timeline was provided for when construction might get underway.
