Orillia's longest-serving mayor passes away at 85
The longest-serving mayor in Orillia’s history passed away on Friday. He was 85.
Ron Stevens served three consecutive terms as the Sunshine City’s mayor from 2000 to 2010.
“Ron was an outstanding example of a true community leader and will be missed by many. His ability to build consensus, his vision for a brighter future, and his passion for improving the lives of residents made him a truly remarkable figure in our city's history,” said Mayor Don McIsaac.
Born in 1939 in Toronto, Stevens dedicated more than 40 years to public service, having also served as the first elected mayor of Severn Township in 1994 until 2000 and again as councillor in 2010.
In 2004, he played a key role in creating the Orillia University Mayor’s Taskforce, which ultimately led to Lakehead University opening an Orillia campus.
He retired from politics in 2022.
Stevens was dedicated to the community he called home and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
The City has lowered flags at municipal facilities in his honour. They will remain lowered until November 19.
A service to celebrate his life will be held on November 18 at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church on Coldwater Road West in Orillia.
A book of condolences for the public to sign will be available starting on Thursday at the Orillia City Centre on Andrew Street South.
