A teenager was struck by a car as he was crossing the road to board his school bus.

Grey Bruce provincial police say a northbound school bus was stopped with its lights activated and stop sign extended as the teen was crossing Highway 10 South of Markdale, south west of Collingwood.

Police say a southbound vehicle failed to stop and struck the 13-year-old as they crossed the street.

The pedestrian received minor injuries.

As a result, a 63-year-old Toronto driver was charged with failing to stop for school bus - stop arm extended, and for failing to surrender an insurance card.

Police wish to remind drivers to slow down when they see a school bus and give it plenty of space, as it could come to a stop at any time.

Failing to stop for a stopped school bus that has its red lights flashing is a serious offence. For a first-time offence, fines range from $400 to $2,000 and drivers can have six demerit points added to their license.
