Rookie MPP Ann Hoggarth’s win in Barrie – unseating a first-term Progressive Conservative – set the trend for the Ontario Liberal Party.
The party won a majority in an election that saw some close races, including two in this area.
CTV News declared Hoggarth the winner over incumbent PC Rod Jackson at about 10:05 p.m., unseating the former City of Barrie councillor from his seat at Queen’s Park.
Newmarket-Aurora and Oak Ridges-Markham were the most hotly-contested ridings in our area. Newly-elected Liberal MPP Chris Ballard (Newmarket-Aurora) and incumbent Helena Jaczek (Oak Ridges-Markham) fought tense races against their Progressive Conservative challengers.
As it stands, our 10 MPPS are:

- Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound: Bill Walker (PC / inc.)
- Dufferin-Caledon: Sylvian Jones (PC / inc)
- Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock (PC / inc)
- Newmarket-Aurora: Chris Ballard (Liberal)
- Oak Ridges-Markham: Helena Jaczek (Liberal / inc)
- Parry Sound-Muskoka: Norm Miller (PC / inc)
- Simcoe-Grey: Jim Wilson (PC / inc)
- Simcoe-North: Garfield Dunlop (PC / inc)
- York-Simcoe: Julia Munro (PC / inc)
Kathleen Wynne won her riding handily and will now lead her party in a majority government. PC leader Tim Hudak has announced he will step down . NDP leader Andrea Horwath has said she will continue on as leader.
