Seniors evacuated from Barrie retirement community

More than 100 seniors were evacuated on a chilly Friday afternoon after fire crews were called to a Barrie retirement community in the city’s north end.

Fire officials were called to Simcoe Terrace Retirement Centre on Donald Street for smoke in the laundry room.

“Crews were able to isolate a unit that seemed to have an overheating event and contain that,” said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Eric McFadden.

The residents were eventually bused to East Bayfield Centre to stay warm while fire crews worked at the retirement centre.
