Fisherman rescued from Lake Simcoe in Innisfil

A fisherman had a close call on Lake Simcoe after becoming stranded on an ice flow off the 30th Sideroad in Innisfil Friday.

According to Innisfil Fire and Rescue Deputy Fire Chief Brent Black, the man ventured onto the lake with a sled carrying his fishing gear, and while he was fishing, strong winds broke up the ice, leaving him separated from shore by open water.

Rescue crews launched a Fortuna boat and hovercraft to reach the fisherman, who was uninjured and dry.

He was safely brought back to shore at the government dock.

Black said the man refused medical attention by the paramedics. “He was at no point submerged in the open water, he remained on the ice shelf and was safe,” he noted.
