Plans for the popular CPCK Holiday Train to make its annual stop in Midhurst have been derailed.

The Holiday Train has rolled through the region every November for more than two decades, but this year the highly anticipated stop has been pulled from the 2024 schedule due to safety concerns.

“Recently, our partners, including, CPKC, Township staff, the OPP, and Fire and Emergency Services, have become aware of heightened safety concerns for this event in 2024,” a representative with the Township of Springwater stated in an email to CTV News.

The Township said the decision came as organizers anticipated “increased turnout and parking concerns along Highway 26.”

“We understand this change may disappoint many residents who traditionally enjoy this event. However, given our commitment to public safety, these steps are crucial,” the Township added.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Rest assured, officials are already planning for a safer and more accessible location for the 2025 Holiday Train stop.

The Township said skipping this year’s event would allow it time find a more suitable location for next year.

“We are dedicated to collaborating with CPKC to secure a safe, enjoyable return in 2025 and for years to come,” the Township stated.

Food Bank Support

For years, the CPKC Holiday Train has helped local food banks with financial and food donations.

“The CPKC Holiday Train stop has been a cherished holiday event for our community, bringing in more than 1,000 pounds of food and $1,000 in donations for Barrie Food Bank last year,” said Karen Shuh, executive director with the Barrie Food Bank. “This support has been invaluable to us as we work to meet the high demand for food assistance, especially during the holiday season.”

While the train adorned with festive lights and performances won’t make its annual stop near Barrie, CPKC has pledged to continue its financial support of the Barrie and Elmvale food banks.

“While we’re disappointed the train won’t be stopping here this year, we’re grateful that CPKC has committed to making a donation to help bridge the gap,” Shuh added.

Anyone hoping to still catch the Holiday Train this year can head to the next closest stops, including Vaughan at 11 a.m. or MacTier at 3 p.m. on Nov. 30.

Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable foot items for the food bank collection.
