Twenty firefighters and seven trucks from three stations battled to contain a fire that broke out in a detached garage at a home on Springfield Road Monday afternoon in Huntsville.

Officials say firefighters managed to stop the flames from causing extensive damage to the house, but noted the fire’s heat did damage the home’s vinyl siding.

Total damage is estimated at $250,000.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined because of the extensive damage, but it was revealed the blaze started in the garage. It has been classified as accidental.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

Fire officials urge residents to store flammable items properly and check electrical systems for any signs of wear.

They encourage the public to drop off unused household hazardous waste products, like paints and aerosols, to 169 Madil Church Road in Huntsville or 1020 Oxtongue Rapids Road in Lake of Bays.

“These products can increase the size of a fire or make it more intense,” the fire department added.
