Jason Nevill will remain behind bars.
Ontario’s parole board is keeping former Barrie Police Service constable Jason Nevill in jail because of concerns he could re-offend. Nevill’s request for parole was turned down last week. The board noted in its decision that while on-duty Nevill had “severely assaulted the victim, then lied about what had occurred.”
Nevill was found guilty last June of assault causing bodily harm, fabricating evidence and obstructing justice. He was sentenced in October to a year in jail.
Timeline:
- May 14, 2013: Closing submissions heard in assault case
- June 21, 2013: Nevill found guilty
- Oct. 17, 2013: Nevill sentenced to a year in jail
- Oct. 22, 2013: Officer denied bail
- Nov. 15, 2013: Nevill resigns from Barrie Police Service
Nevill was caught on camera attacking Jason Stern during an arrest in November 2010 outside the Bayfield Mall in Barrie. Stern was charged with assaulting a police officer at first, but those charges were later dropped.
Another reason the board denied his parole was because it couldn’t confirm Nevill’s claims that he has lined up a job and anger management counselling in Midland when he is released, the decision says.
After his conviction, Nevill resigned from Barrie’s police department. He isn’t appealing his conviction. His victim, Jason Stern, is suing Nevill in civil court.
Nevill can ask for parole again in June.
