Here's where you can retire your spruce after the holiday season

If you got a retired spruce that you’d like to put to rest after the holidays, here are a few options you may want to consider:

The County of Simcoe

In Simcoe County, a bi-weekly Christmas tree collection will take place throughout the month of January, giving residents the opportunity to dispose of their evergreens.

The county is asking that residents place their shrub curbside by 7 a.m. on the Monday of their garbage collection week. Collection may not occur on your regular garbage day, so the county says it’s vital to place it outside Monday morning to ensure it gets scooped up.

They also ask that you remove all decorations, lights, and plastic before setting your tree out. It's a good idea to place it in a cleared space at the end of your driveway away from any snowbanks.

The City of Barrie

The City of Barrie collects Christmas trees weekly in January ending on the last full week of your regular curbside collection day.

The city says all decorations and tree stands must be removed before placing them at the end of the curb. Alternatively, residents are encouraged to take their evergreens to the Barrie Landfill at 272 Ferndale Drive, North for composting.

The city says tree limbs must be no larger than 10 centimeters in diameter and no longer than six-feet with a max height of eight-and-a-half feet.

There's plenty of time before you have to say goodbye to your conifer, so for now, enjoy them with your family and friends while the magic of the season lasts.
