City of Barrie celebrates National Indigenous History Month and Peoples Day

The City of Barrie is hosting several events and programs this month to celebrate National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day.

June 2: Flag raising at Barrie City Hall

June 4: Meet an Inuk: Muckpaloo Ipeelie at the Painswick Public Library

June 13: Workshop: Wampum Belts Woven Through Anishinaabe History at the Southshore Centre on Lakeshore Drive

June 21: Coldwater Ojibway from the Southshore Centre to the Spirit Catcher along Kempenfelt Bay at 10 a.m.

Gather along the water's edge to experience the drum representing Mother Earth's heartbeat.

June 29: Indigenous History Month Celebration at Meridian Place from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The event includes family fun activities, community booths, artisans, drumming, and dancing.

June 29: Outdoor film screening: Kayak to Klemtu at Meridian Place at dusk (approx. 9:30 p.m.)

Take in a film under the stars with the Barrie Film Festival.

CITY COLLABORATION

The city partnered with the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team from the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle, Barrie Native Friendship Centre, Red Quills, and the Barrie Public Library​, to acknowledge the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
