York Regional Police are investigating the suspected poisoning of a dog in Vaughan that resulted in the animal having to be put down.

On Wednesday, a dog and its owner were walking in the area of Shawbridge Boulevard and Gidleigh Park Crescent, when the dog stopped near a mailbox and began to eat something.

The next day, the dog became violently ill and by morning was unable to walk. The dog was taken to a veterinarian, who determined the symptoms the dog was experiencing was consistent with antifreeze (glycol) poisoning.

By Friday, the dog’s condition worsened and had to be euthanized. Police were contacted on Monday and launched an investigation.

“Investigators located dog kibble that had been spread over a 15-foot area around a mailbox on Shawbridge Boulevard at Gidleigh Park Crescent,” York Regional Police said in a statement.

The kibble was seized and has been sent for testing. Police are asking pet owners and parents to be extra cautious and to report any suspicious activity.
