Police in Aurora, Ont. are investigating a series of break-ins, and they say an unusual duo may be to blame.

York Regional Police officers are looking for two suspects who have been targeting homes left unlocked, and the break-ins have people who live in the neighbourhood on high alert.

As Joe Chimenti jogs through his Aurora neighbourhood, he’s looking out for any suspicious activity after the recent rash of break-ins.

“I’ve just heard they send somebody in scouting the area, looking for an opportunity when no one is home,” he says.

Police say eight homes in the Bathurst and St. John Sideroad-area have been broken into over the past two months. Police say a woman targeting homes during the day, and gets in easily because in most cases the doors of the homes have been left unlocked, even when no one is home.

“She’s not forcing entry,” says York Regional Police Const. Laura Nicolle. “In some cases she’s actually cleaned up the house after so it doesn’t look like she has broken in.”

So far, investigators are looking for two suspects. The woman is believed to be between 40 and 50 years old, about 5’-4”, with olive skin and a heavy build. Witnesses say she was wearing a fabric scarf or hat, and a long dress. Police are also looking for a man who has been seen driving a blue van, which neighbours have reported idling in the area. Investigators say it has often been days before the victims realize they’ve been robbed.

There have even been some incidents where someone was home and the suspect got away empty handed. This was the case for one homeowner who asked to remain anonymous.

“There was a knock at my door and before I could open it a woman had walked in wearing nylon gloves.  I asked her what she was doing in my house and she handed me a gift card and quickly turned around and left,” the homeowner says.

It wasn’t until the homeowner called police that she learned about the string of break-ins. She is now taking every precaution.

“I was shocked. I’m making sure my door is locked and making sure I’m using my security system.”
