A scan of a bin from Barrie landfill on Thursday afternoon found radioactive material inside.

A garbage truck delivered a bin full of recycling material to a business in Barrie on Thursday. A scan was done at the business and a small amount of radioactive material was detected.

The driver of the truck then drove the bin back to the landfill and Barrie Fire was called around 3:20 p.m.

Fire officials say the small container is contained within the dumpster and there is no danger to the public.

Officials say the small item could be as simple as a smoke alarm, microwave or even batteries.

The City of Barrie is calling a company that deals with radioactive material to remove the container.
