Police say a Toronto couple is facing child abandonment charges after two kids were left in a car outside a casino.

Durham Regional Police say they were called to the Great Blue Heron Casino in Scugog on Tuesday night.

They say they found a three-year-old and a five-year-old sleeping inside an unlocked van parked outside.

Police say the children appeared cold thanks to outside temperatures hovering around the freezing mark, but neither one needed medical intervention.

Their 35-year-old mother and her 58-year-old husband were inside the casino gambling.

Police say the children are now in protective custody.
