Students woke up to the sound of smoke alarms on Thursday morning after fire ripped through a unit at a Georgian College residency building.

Barrie fire crews were called to the residency building on Thursday, just before 10 a.m. after receiving reports of a fire on the eighth floor.

Firefighters broke down the door to the unit causing smoke to quickly spread throughout the rest of the building. Students on the seventh and eighth floor were evacuated.

The fire department does it`s highrise training at the residence and since crews were familiar with the building, they were able to quickly put the fire out.

“Where this fire was today was directly across from where we did our last training scenario,” says deputy fire chief Corey Mainprize. "Being familiar with the building allows crews to access the most appropriate stairs, know where hose cabinets are."

Barrie fire investigators say it turns out a charger that was plugged in and wedged between the bed and a wall is what sparked the fire by overheating.

Students on the seventh floor have been allowed back into their units, but students on the eighth floor could be displaced for a day.

No one was injured and the fire department is crediting floor warderns, who used ttheir fire safety training to make sure everyone got out of the residence safely.
