Six students are homeless after a fire destroyed a house in north Barrie on Saturday morning.

Crews were called to the home at 56 Hickling Trail around 6:40 a.m. and when they arrived the home was engulfed in flames.

Barrie Fire Public Safety Officer Samantha Hoffman tells CTV News there were five students home at the time of the fire and managed to escape safely, some of them through a window. One firefighter suffered a broken foot.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby structures but the house is a total loss. There were working fire alarms inside the home.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Barrie Police are continuing to investigate.
