An investigation is underway after a body was found decomposing near a Barrie pond.
Barrie police launched a search just after 11 pm. on Tuesday, following a call about a body in the marsh area of Dyments Pond.
A search just off of Victoria Street led officers to the decomposing body, which they believe belongs to a woman.
This area is frequently used by people who are homeless. In fact, a short distance from where the body was found, several tents and campsites were set up.
A woman, who didn’t want to be named, claims to know the person who died. She’s now concerned for the safety of everyone who gathers there.
Investigators closed off an area around Victoria, Vespra Street and John Street while they collect further evidence.
Officers are still trying to figure out the identity of the woman, but don’t believe the body is connected to any ongoing Barrie police missing persons investigations.
An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Anthropologists with the Centre of Forensic Sciences are also involved with the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
