More than a dozen people from York Region were arrested for trafficking fentanyl patches.

York Regional Police say they’ve laid more than 140 charges against 13 people. Police allege the group members wrote false prescriptions and recruited people to have them filled at local pharmacies.

Police began investigating the fraudulent prescriptions in September after they’d been received at a pharmacy in Georgina.

Yesterday, police executed search warrants in Newmarket, Uxbridge, and Georgina. All suspects were arrested without incident.

One of the suspects is from Newmarket and one is from Uxbridge. The rest are from Georgina.

York police say the recreational use of fentanyl patches comes with many dangers, and people may not know the risks associated with the drug. Fentanyl is an opioid-based pain killer roughly 100 times stronger than morphine. Police say a number of deaths from fentanyl overdoses have happened across North America.
