Investigators with York Regional Police’s Auto/Cargo Theft unit have recovered more than $1 million worth of merchandise stolen during transport.
Police say in early May they received information that a significant quantity of items was stolen from a variety of retailers during transportation.
The items were destined for retailers’ warehouses but were re-routed to independently-owned warehouses where they were stored until being sold illegally, police say.
Multiple search warrants were executed on warehouses in Vaughan and Toronto. As a result of the warrants, 15 loads of cargo were recovered, which police say contained merchandise including baby products, barbecues, household appliances, cleaning supplies, tools, musical instruments, forklifts, vehicle antifreeze and a baby grand piano.
The estimated value of the goods recovered is believed to be about $1.4 million.
The majority of the property recovered has been identified and returned to the owners.
The investigation is ongoing and officers are asking anyone with information to come forward.
